Scrap catalytic converters
Search for local scrap catalytic converter & DPF buyers. Contact them directly to compare prices and arrange a collection or delivery to site.

Catalytic converter prices
In short, genuine scrap catalytic converter prices usually range from £10 -£400 each. And anywhere in between. A handful may exceed the £500+ value at certain times. However, those units are very rare. Prices could fluctuate throughout the day. You’ll sometimes be paid more if you deliver your cats. You could receive a higher rate if you have larger quantities to recycle.

Grading your cats
Take good quality photos of your catalytic converter / DPF and part numbers. If rusty, you can lighty use a wire brush or sandpaper to reveal the OEM codes. Send photos to your local catalytic buyer to request current scrap values.

Scrap catalytic converter prices
Refiners test each type of catalytic converter to determine the precious metal content.
Based on those findings, they can determine the value of each CAT based on the precious metal prices that day. Cat converter buyers will usually get prices from their own digital database or catalogues.
How much are scrap catalytic converters worth?
In short, genuine scrap catalytic converter prices usually range from £10 -£400 each. And anywhere in between. A handful may exceed the £500+ value at certain times. However, those units are very rare.
Prices could fluctuate throughout the day.
You’ll sometimes be paid more if you deliver your cats. You could receive a higher rate if you have larger quantities to recycle.
Although purchasing these as new is costly, their scrap value is very low averaging £2 – £8 each.
Why are catalytic converters valuable?
Catalytic converters contain precious metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium as catalysts. These metals have a high market value, and recycling companies can extract and refine them for various industrial applications, including electronics and jewellery.
Precious metals used in catalytic converters are relatively scarce and finite resources. As demand for these metals grows, recycling becomes an essential source, making catalytic converters valuable as a metal resource.
How to sell scrap catalytic converters
Scrappie is here to help you whether you’re a scrap dealer, tradesperson, or a member of the public with scrap catalytic converetrs for sale. Here are answers to the most popular questions about scrap cats.
Recycling process
Firstly, catalytic converters are cut open, breaking and releasing the biscuit inside. The contents are then milled into an extremely fine powder or dust.
This dust is eventually refined to separate the platinum, palladium or rhodium. These are then melted into bars for re-use.
Finding a buyer
Everyone can sell their catalytic converters. If you have an old cat & feel like cashing in, we’ll try and get you the best rates.
Mechanics and accident repair garages often acquire damaged catalytic converters which they sell. Mobile scrap collectors and scrap dealers can also use Scrppie to locate the best rates for re-sale. Car breakers can benefit significantly because of the quantities of catalytic converters they produce.
If you have a one cheap catalyst, some buyers won’t collect due to the cost of fuel, time & manpower involved.
However buyers may still offer you a price taking these factors into account. Another way would be to deliver your catalytic converters to a licenced site. You could be paid a higher rate too.
But if collection is required, we do have members who can help you too.
Getting paid
If you are a member of the public, dealers require copies of the following:
VEHICLE V5 LOG BOOK
Not legally required, but some buyers may need proof the catalytic converter has come from your vehicle.
PHOTO ID
Driving Licence or Passport & recent utility bill
BANK DETAILS
Account Name, Number & Sort Code
What’s inside a catalytic converter?
If possible, take a look inside your catalytic converter or DPF. There are 3 types of unit to look for:
- Ceramic
- Metallic Foil
- DPF
Ceramic catalytics
This type is also known as a ceramic monolith catalytic converter. It consists of a ceramic with a honeycomb-like structure coated with catalyst materials.
The exhaust gases flow through the channels, where chemical reactions occur, converting harmful pollutants like carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and hydrocarbons (HC) into less harmful substances.
Metallic foil catalytics
Metallic foil catalytic converters are another variation, using a different substrate material. Instead of ceramic, they employ thin metal foils coated with catalysts.
These can offer advantages such as improved heat resistance and durability. However, if there is any damage to the core, the unit might be worthless.
Diesel particulate filter
DPFs aka Diesel Particulate Filters, are designed specifically to capture and remove particulate matter (soot) from the exhaust of diesel engines.
They work by trapping and then periodically burning off the accumulated soot, reducing emissions of particulate matter.
Aftermarket units
Although purchasing these as new is costly, their scrap value is very low averaging £2 – £8 each.
- E9
- E2
What are aftermarket catalytic converters?
Aftermarket catalytic converters (aka Euro Cats), are non OEM, non original units. Aftermarkets are manufactured by third parties and are used to replace your original units.
